Holiday Seasonal Jobs 2026: Who's Hiring and How to Stay On
Amazon plans 300,000+ holiday hires while overall retail seasonal hiring shrinks. Who is hiring in 2026, how to apply fast, and how to turn a seasonal job permanent.
If you are looking for a few extra shifts before the holidays, or a paycheck while you look for something bigger, this is the week to move. Amazon just announced its biggest holiday hiring target yet. Other big retailers are hiring fewer seasonal workers than in past years, so the good spots will go early.
Here is what has actually been announced, how to get hired quickly, and how to use a seasonal job as a step toward steady work in January.
What holiday hiring looks like in 2026
The picture is mixed, so here are the verified numbers as of October 2026:
- Amazon said on October 20 that it plans to hire more than 300,000 people across the U.S. for seasonal, part-time and full-time roles in its fulfillment and delivery network. Amazon says seasonal workers average about $20 an hour. Starting January 1, 2027, eligible seasonal employees working at least 30 hours a week can get healthcare coverage from their first day.
- Michaels announced in September that it would hire more than 10,000 seasonal team members, and said nearly half of its seasonal in-store positions became regular roles after last year's holidays.
- Across retail as a whole, the outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas forecasts about 450,000 seasonal hires from October to December. That is a little below 2025's 461,500, which was already the smallest holiday gain since 2008. Challenger says retailers are leaning on automation, current employees and on-demand worker pools first.
The wider job market is slow too. The latest Bureau of Labor Statistics jobs report, for September 2026, showed payrolls up only 29,000 and unemployment at 4.2%. The October report comes out November 6.
In plain terms: one giant employer is hiring more, and many others are hiring less. Apply early, and apply to more than one place.
Where to look this week
Start with the employers' own career pages, not reposts on random sites. Fake "seasonal job" listings that ask for bank details or a fee up front are a known scam. A real employer will not charge you to apply.
- Warehouses and delivery: Amazon lists openings at amazon.com/localjobs and says new listings go up weekly through December. Check shipping carriers and local distribution centers too.
- Retail stores: craft, sporting goods, department and big-box stores. Many hire through in-store hiring days, so walk in and ask.
- Restaurants, hotels and event venues: holiday parties and travel create short-term shifts, often with tips.
- Local small businesses: gift shops, garden centers, bakeries and shipping stores often hang a sign instead of posting online. Small shops rarely show up on the big job boards, so ask in person.
How to get hired fast
Seasonal hiring moves quickly. Some employers interview and offer on the same day. A few things help:
- Lead with your availability. For seasonal roles, the most important question is often "when can you work?" If you can work nights, weekends, Black Friday week or the days around Christmas, say so up front.
- Keep a short, current résumé ready. One page is plenty. Put your most recent jobs first and add a line about reliability, like attendance, safety or meeting a daily quota, if it is true.
- Match their words. If the posting says "fast-paced," "lift up to 50 pounds" or "customer-focused," use the same words when they are true about you. It helps both human readers and screening software.
- Answer the phone. Seasonal recruiters call down a list. A missed call can mean a missed job, so set up your voicemail and check it.
- Show up early to hiring events with a photo ID and any documents they ask for in advance.
How to turn a seasonal job into a permanent one
Michaels' number, nearly half of last season's in-store seasonal roles becoming regular, shows it happens. It is not automatic, and each employer decides based on its own needs. Here is what tends to help:
- Say you want to stay, early. Tell your manager in your first week or two that you would like a regular role after the season. They cannot plan around you if they do not know.
- Be the reliable one. In December, managers remember who showed up on time, covered shifts and stayed calm on the busiest days.
- Learn one extra thing. Run the register and the stockroom. Get certified on the forklift if they offer it. Each skill makes you easier to keep.
- Ask how the conversion works. "How do seasonal employees move into regular roles here?" is a fair question to ask in the interview or soon after you start.
- Write things down. Keep a short list of what you did: peak-day volume, praise from customers, extra training. It becomes your next résumé update.
Using the season as a bridge to your next career job
Plenty of people taking holiday work are not career retail workers. They were laid off, they are between careers, or they are covering the bills while they look for work in their field. If that is you, a seasonal job buys time and income. The risk is that the real search stops while you work long shifts.
Two things are worth knowing. First, many employers slow down hiring in late December as budgets close and decision-makers take time off. Second, a lot of people restart their search in January. If your résumé, cover letters and target list are ready before the new year, you start ahead of that rush instead of in the middle of it.
This is where we can help. AI Apply Jobs keeps your career search going while you work holiday shifts. You upload your résumé once, plus anything else about you. The AI asks questions about your own background. We build your hiring website and research real openings in your field, along with the hiring emails those employers publish themselves. Then we draft a résumé tailored to each job and a cover letter addressed to each company. Nothing goes out until you approve it.

The search settings matter for anyone working a temporary job. You set the job titles you actually want, the area, and a pay floor. Your current employer, including the place you are working this season, can go on the never-contact list, and we will never email it.
When your days are full of shifts, the job desk keeps every opening in one place, with Apply links to each employer's own site. We do not submit applications for you. You apply on the employer's site, and the desk helps you keep track of where you applied.

Plans start at $99 setup plus $24.99 a month as of October 2026 (see pricing). We cannot promise interviews or offers; hiring decisions belong to employers. If you want to know whether it fits your situation, you get real-person support from the owner, Johnathon Lawson: [email protected].

A simple plan for the next two weeks
- This week: apply to two or three seasonal employers directly on their own sites, and go to one in-person hiring event if there is one near you.
- Next week: once you have shifts, tell your manager you would like to stay after the season.
- Every week: spend an hour or two on your career search, or let a service handle the drafting so your January starts with applications already out.
You do not have to choose between a paycheck now and a better job later. A seasonal job can give you both, if you plan for it.
Frequently asked questions
When should I apply for holiday seasonal jobs in 2026?
Now. Many retailers began hiring in September, and Amazon says it is posting new listings weekly from October through December. With overall retail seasonal hiring forecast lower than last year, the earlier you apply, the more choices you have.
Can a seasonal job become permanent?
Often, but not always. Michaels says nearly half of last season's seasonal in-store roles became regular positions, and Amazon says seasonal employees can move into full-time roles. Tell your manager early that you want to stay, and ask how the conversion works.
Do seasonal workers get benefits?
It depends on the employer. Amazon says that starting January 1, 2027, eligible seasonal employees working at least 30 hours a week can get healthcare coverage from their first day. Check each employer's own posting for details.
Should I keep job hunting while working a seasonal job?
If the seasonal job is a bridge, yes. Keep a little time each week for your career search so your applications are ready before the January rush. Don't contact your seasonal employer about outside jobs, and put it on any never-contact list you use.
